UPDATE 6/3/16: Due to health issues, Tom Howarth has withdrawn his candidacy. The Rappahannock Democrats thank him for running in their neighboring district and wish him a speedy recovery.

From the News Leader: Part of the USA Today Network:

A man who made a vow to serve the poor following his battle with cancer has announced his plans to run for Virginia’s 6th Congressional District.

Warren County Democrat Tom Howarth said he is in the process of filing his candidacy for his party’s nomination to run against the GOP’s winner in the primary election on June 14. Republican Harry Griego is running against incumbent U.S. Rep. Bob Goodlatte in the primary.

“This is such a strange political year,” Howarth said. “It’s confusing, but it’s also an opportunity. I have no illusions about how difficult a district this is, but a candidate, given the mix of things, could really have an impact this time.

“I think we should be challenging Mr. Goodlatte on some of his policies on immigration, on voting rights and on what he is or isn’t doing about not getting things done.”
