INFORMATION LETTER FOR POTENTIAL CANVASSERS FOR DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATES FALL 2016
My name is Greg Ludlow and my responsibility is to organize the door to door canvassing operation in Rappahannock County for Democratic candidates in the Presidential and House of Representatives Virginia 5th District Elections in Fall 2016.
Last year for the first time in the County we organized a volunteer campaign that covered the entire County canvassing for April Moore in the 26th District Virginia Senate Race. This year we have of course a very important General Election for President and also a race for the House of Representatives in Congress for the 5th District of Virginia. An alphabetical list has been compiled of some 1700 voters by Precinct in Rappahannock County consisting of Independents, Leaning Democrats and Strong Democrats. The number of voters that we intend to reach out to this year is considerably higher than that of last year, as, considering that it was our first time canvassing door to door in 2015, we concentrated primarily on lists of Good Democrats. Consequently, given our expanded voter lists this year and given the importance of the General Election we are seeking more canvassing volunteers in our campaign to elect Democratic candidates to office. There are 6 Precincts in Rappahannock County and last year we had 2 volunteers per Precinct who canvassed door to door. This year we are hoping to double the number of volunteers. Last year a colleague and I canvassed the entire Sperryville Precinct, t and we completed our canvassing in three Saturdays, spread out over 8 weekends from the weekend after Labor Day until the last weekend in October, or on an almost one in three weekend basis, thus enabling flexibility in scheduling for the canvassers. All volunteers would be placed in teams of at least two people and provided with the necessary materials, voter lists, candidate literature, maps etc. Only one car would be necessary, as some of the locations are not like in urban or suburban areas literally next door to one another, hence we drive much more than we walk. This is an enjoyable experience where you get to meet people face to face, and, as several studies have shown and from personal experience, a more effective and personalized way of getting out the vote. We will be holding information sessions on canvassing in August and early September, when volunteers will be provided with materials such as voter lists, maps etc., and the necessary literature on the candidates for distribution to voters. These sessions will be prior to the Rappahannock County Democratic Committee General Meetings, so as to make it more convenient for scheduling purposes.
