A note from RCDC Treasurer Mary-Sherman Willis on the passing of Lillian Freeman Aylor:

We say goodbye to our beloved fellow Democrat, Lillian Freeman Aylor, who passed away peacefully on February 16, at age 86. Born in Gid Brown Hollow in 1938, Lillian lived in the county all her life, where she raised her three children and worked as accountant and innkeeper at the Inn at Mt. Vernon Farm in Sperryville. She was celebrated for her work for the welfare of her community, active in her church and its choir, and a founding member of the Scrabble School African-American Preservation Foundation.

Lillian was committed to the political life of the county. Working to ensure that Blacks would not be kept away from the polls, she served as an election official for over 35 years. She was active in the RCDC as treasurer and secretary, steadfast at Committee events. Lillian always stepped up. We will miss her fortitude and her ready smile. Her book, I’ll Get It Done (2019, Bair Ink Books) says it all. Rest in peace, dear Miss Lillian.

Services will be held on February 28, 2025, at the Wayland Blue Ridge Baptist Association, 15044 Ryland Chapel Rd, Rixeyville, VA 22737, noon to 1 pm.
