Tim Kaine and VA Senator Suhas Subramanyam in Rapp for a round table discussion
Democratic US Sen Tim Kaine and VA Senator Suhas Subramanyam came to Rapp Sunday, September 8, for a round table discussion about the county and their campaigns—Kaine for re-election and Suhas for our 10th Congressional district. A dozen Rappahannockans—farmers, educators, environmental activists, entrepreneurs, community organizers, and more—shared their concerns and took questions from the crowd. It was a friendly and inspiring moment, on a sunny Sunday afternoon at the Park pavilion, to see these dedicated public servants working hard to listen to their constituents and look for solutions.

Educational videos to help counter Republican attacks
From Bea Dixon, independent Democratic Party Activist….

Kamala is going to get attacked by the Right, by the establishment, for her economic policies that will elevate many of us, make life better. Let’s prepare ourselves! It’s going to be mean.
+
Already yesterday on PBS Newshour David Brooks said that she was “illiterate in the field of economics”, that “addressing price gouging will lead us into socialism”.
+
We need tools to counter these attacks!

Are you familiar with Robert Reich’s work? He is a professor, author, lawyer, and political commentator who worked in the administrations of presidents Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter and served as Secretary of Labor from 1993 to 1997 in the cabinet of Bill Clinton.
+
Professor Reich has been very outspoken these past few years about our economic system that keeps many Americans trapped (not just the poor). He wrote that “we must ignore the scaremongering tactics Republicans throw at us. He reminds us that for the last 85 years, Republicans have been yelling ‘socialism’ at every initiative designed to help Americans”. Apparently, even Truman said that “when Republicans use the slogan ‘Down with Socialism’ what they really mean is ‘Down with Progress'”.
+
Reich created a series of short videos in which he debunks myths about our economic system that keep us blind. They are short, easy to understand, fun, and perfect tools to educate ourselves and our constituents:
+
Debunking myth #2 – The government obstructs the free market
Debunking myth #3 – The rich deserve to be rich
Debunking myth #4 – Corporate donations are free speech
Debunking myth #5 – The market does not play favorites
Debunking myth #6 – Global trade is good for everyone
Debunking myth #7- America is socialist (video)
Debunking myth #7 – America is socialist (text)
Debunking myth #8 – Corporate tax cuts create jobs
+
We can help Kamala by making sure that people around us have an opportunity to watch these videos.
